Adam Ruddle is the Chief Investment Officer at LV=. He has responsibility for the investment management, allocation and optimisation of over £14bn of assets under management. His remit includes designing and setting investment strategies, managing group liquidity, the oversight of external asset managers and the structuring of physical and synthetic investment solutions for the company. Adam has been with LV= for nearly 15 years working in a wide range of roles including Asset Liability Management, Financial Reporting and Valuation, Capital Management and With-Profits oversight. Adrian is Head of Group Climate Investment Oversight at Legal & General, partnering with the L&G divisions to oversee the “Invest” pillar of our Group climate and nature strategy. Externally, Adrian is involved in a number of industry initiatives.  He is the Legal & General representative within the Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA) and is also on the SBTi Expert Advisory Group for the Financial Institution Net Zero (FINZ) Standard, having led the work to obtain to SBTi verification on Legal & General’s near-term investment targets.

Adrian has worked at L&G for coming up to twenty years, across a variety of departments and roles, while driving investment climate change initiatives within the Group function for the last seven years. He is a qualified Actuary with a BSc in Maths, Statistics, Operational Research and Economics from Warwick University.

Ali Karakuyu is a seasoned expert with 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, working in BBVA Corporate & Investment Banking’s (CIB) Insurance Debt Advisory team. Ali is part of the broader Advisory division under BBVA’s CIB Investment Banking & Finance business covering a broad range of (re)insurance companies across Europe and Bermuda.

At BBVA (CIB) Ali helps (re)insurers to optimise their capital structure and funding solutions keeping in mind the expectations of regulators, shareholders, ratings agencies and other key stakeholders. 

Previously, Ali held a key role at S&P Global Ratings in the UK as Director and Lead Analyst in the insurance practice, where he was the global analytical lead for the firm’s insurance capital model criteria and contributed significantly to the development of  insurance rating methodologies. Prior to that Ali held various actuarial roles including the U.K. Government Actuary’s Department.

Brian Digney

BRIAN DIGNEY

Brian Digney joined the SBAI in March 2023 in the role of Research and Content Director. He is responsible for content development and co-ordination of the ongoing and future working groups on a wide variety of topics, including valuation of private assets, ESG & carbon footprinting, governance, insurance linked strategies, digital assets, asset management regulation and compliance as well as new topics to be determined in the future.

Prior to joining the SBAI, Brian was the Head of Due Diligence & Governance Oversight at Innocap Global Investment Management (Ireland) Ltd (2018-2023) in Dublin, a subsidiary of Innocap Investment Management Inc., a US$50bn hedge fund platform. He acted as Designated Person for Operational Risk Management, a regulated role by the Central Bank of Ireland. He also sat on Innocap’s Irish Risk Oversight and Valuation Committees. In 2017, Brian joined Albourne Partners in London as a Senior Operational Due Diligence Analyst. From 2015 to 2017 he was employed as an Operational Due Diligence Analyst at Mercer Sentinel in London. From 2010 to 2015 he held various Associate level roles at Decura LLP, Morgan Stanley and Citi.

Brian holds an LLB Hons in Law with Criminology and an M.Sc. in Management and Corporate Governance from University of Ulster. Brian is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst.

Catherine is the Head of Investments at Brit Insurance, with responsibility for managing all aspects of the group’s investment assets, including strategy, implementation and monitoring. She is also responsible for integrating ESG considerations into the investment process and leading on the financial impacts of climate risk from an investment perspective. Catherine is a member of Brit’s ESG Steering Committee and the Climate Change Risk Working Party. Henrik Matsen

HENRIK MATSEN

Henrik is a Co-Founder and former Member of the Management Executive Committee of Athora, the European life insurance affiliate of Apollo Global Management. From its formation in 2014 as a subsidiary of Athene (the US life insurance subsidiary of Apollo) until his departure in 2023, Henrik held multiple group management roles and directorships of multiple operating insurance entities across Europe and Bermuda.
During his time with Athene and Athora, the business raised in aggregate approximately €6.75bn of equity capital, and grew into a meaningful European life insurer with close to €100bn of assets under management.
Prior to this, he was Co-founder and Director of RMR Advisors Ltd, an investment and advisory firm which provided insurance related advisory services to Apollo, Athene and their affiliates from 2012 until the creation of Athora. RMR Advisors Ltd was acquired by the NYSE listed Athene Holding Ltd in October 2016.
In addition, Henrik was the Founder and Chairman of a digital non-life insurance price comparison website in the Nordic region named Kasko. Kasko raised capital from institutional and private investors through several capital raises between 2014 to 2019. He also established a joint venture with the UK financial product and market intelligence provider Defaqto in the Nordic region at the time.
Henrik previously had an Advisory background at UBS in its Financial Institutions Group Investment Banking division, and in FICC Structuring. Henrik holds a B.Sc. degree from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH) in Bergen, Norway.

Xavier Solano leads on prudential regulation and operational resilience and coordinates a team of technical experts covering key topics such as Solvency UK, industry stress tests, the Insurance Resolution Regime, operational resilience, and liquidity risk, among others.

Xavier works closely with the insurance and long-term savings sector, representing their interests to the Bank of England/PRA, HM Treasury, IAIS and other key stakeholders. He has participated in the PRA's Subject Expert Groups on Solvency UK and Stress Testing and in CMORG's industry subgroups.

The ABI Prudential Regulation Team has earned several awards including UK & Europe InsuranceERM Risk Team of the Year (Feb 2023) and the Risk and Resilience British Insurance Award (July 2023).

Xiaowei Han

XIAOWEI HAN

Xiaowei Han joined TIAA as the Head of ALM in February 2019, where she leads the asset liability management function. Her team focuses on liability-driven investment strategies, interest rate risk management, economic capital framework, dividend optimization, stress testing, asset and derivatives modeling, economic scenario generation, and supporting various corporate initiatives.

Before joining TIAA, Xiaowei worked for Transamerica since 2008, gaining deep experience in variable and fixed annuities, universal life, retirement & pension, and institutional businesses. She led the universal life valuation and modeling functions and also headed the Enterprise ALM function, which focused on holistic hedging, ALM analytics and strategies, capital management, asset and derivatives modeling, and ALM reporting across all lines of business. Prior to this, she worked as a Financial Risk Manager responsible for identifying financial risk in ALM/hedging strategies, modeling, and pricing related to annuities, retirement, and institutional businesses. Her other responsibilities at Transamerica included managing general account investments and hedging programs, liquidity management, designing and implementing variable annuity hedging strategies, reinsurance, capital initiatives, as well as statutory reporting for variable and fixed annuities.

Xiaowei holds a Master of Science degree in actuarial science from the University of Iowa, a Master of Science degree in physical chemistry from Nanjing University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Nanjing University. Additionally, she attained the following designations: Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), Chartered Financial Analyst

(CFA®) charter holder, and Member of American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).
